Appendix A: Collaborative Syllabus Discussion Questions

Instructors can use a variety of questions designed to solicit student collaboration on the syllabus. These questions are inspired and derived from the existing literature on collaborative course design (e.g., Aiken et al., 2016; Murray, 2021). These questions include:

  1. What do you want to learn in this course?
  2. What kinds of activities will help you learn best?
  3. What’s your one big question? “I really want to know….”
  4. How would you like to meet for office hours (Zoom or Face-to-Face)?
  5. How can you best demonstrate your learning? (e.g., essays, quizzes, exams, other)
